It is important that you are covered by good young driver insurance. Another danger most people don’t worry about is driving tired. In many cases driving tired is as bad as driving drunk. So if you have to drive tired do what you can to stay awake. In busy urban areas remember to keep your doors locked and windows up. Random violent acts aren’t especially common but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you somehow become embroiled in a road rage incident remain in your car with doors locked and windows closed and call the police.
Before embarking on long car journeys you should check a number of things. Try to have your car regularly serviced. Have your oil checked, your tire pressure checked, and even your petrol checked. An unnecessary breakdown can be very costly.
Follow a few key rules if you need to pull over. Try and stop in a well-lit and populated area. The same concept goes for parking. If you plan to be away from your car until after dark be sure to park close to an exit in a well-lit area. If you feel uncomfortable have a friend or colleague walk you out to your car. Another good idea is to keep your cell phone and keys in a pocket, rather then purse, so that if your purse is stolen you will still be able to flee. When leaving your car the most important thing you can do is lock your doors, roll your windows up, and hide whatever valuables you have inside.
